| Summary: | A review of the possible links between gender, domestic violence and animal abuse involves analyzing three questions. One of them is how animal abuse can be a psychological, and an effective mechanism of domination and control of women and children. In addition, it is considered that violence against animals is a reliable indicator of the existence of other possible forms of interpersonal violence. Finally, it is important to consider the effects on children witnessing violence against animals. This requires a deep reflection on who we consider victims of gender and domestic violence and on which are the needs of the victims of such violence that we should consider. Both discussions will enable us to better protect women and improve the welfare of animals. Una revisión de los vínculos posibles entre la violencia de género, violencia doméstica y el maltrato animal supone analizar tres cuestiones. Una de ellas es cómo el maltrato animal puede ser una violencia psicológica, un mecanismo efectivo de dominación y control de mujeres y niños. Además, se trata de considerar que la violencia contra los animales es un indicador fiable sobre la existencia de otras posibles formas de violencia interpersonal. Por último, es importante tener en cuenta los efectos que tiene en los menores ser testigos de violencia contra sus animales. Todo ello nos exige una reflexión sobre quiénes debemos considerar víctimas de la violencia de género y doméstica y sobre cuáles son las necesidades de las víctimas de ese tipo de violencia que debemos tener en cuenta. Ambas discusiones nos permitirán proteger mejor a las mujeres y mejorar el bienestar de los animales. |
