Bien qu’au XVIIIe siècle, la criminologie n’ait pas encore été constituée en discipline à part entière, la criminalité et ses causes étaient largement discutées au travers de la fiction populaire, des sermons d’exécution, des récits de décès et autres formes de littérature criminelle. Benjamin Rush (1745-1813), un des pères fondateurs des États-Unis et de l’administration de la justice pénale, s’est appuyé sur un mélange de psychologie empirique et de biologie pour répondre à la peur culturelle de l’irrationalité criminalité et de la folie. L’article soutient que les propositions de réponse pénale de Rush font partie d’un projet proto-criminologique plus large lié à la fois à la culture gothique de son époque et à la science d’alors de l’homme criminel. Par son plaidoyer public et son travail de conférencier, Rush a contribué à la fondation précoce d’une forme positiviste de la criminologie américaine, une science alors ancrée dans la peur du criminel monstrueux et étrange. | ||

Although criminology had not cohered into a discipline in the eighteenth century, Americans widely discussed crime and its causes through popular fiction, execution sermons, death narratives, and other forms of crime literature. Benjamin Rush (1745-1813), a founding father of the nation and the penitentiary, drew on a mix of empirical psychology and biology in order to address the cultural fear of criminal irrationality and madness. The article argues that Rush’s proposal for the penitentiary is part of a larger proto-criminological project and connects the gothic culture of his time with the existing science of criminal man. Through his public advocacy and his work as a lecturer, Rush helped to found the early instantiation of a positivist style of American criminology, rooted in fears of the monstrous and uncanny criminal. | ||
