Moreover, studies also suggest strong correlation between youth criminal behavior and mental disorders (Ulzen and Hamilton, Can J Psychiatry 43:57–63, 1998; Ulzen and Hamilton, Can Child Adolesc Psychiatr Rev 12:113–6, 2003; Cesaroni & Peterson-Badali, 2005; Vandergoot, Justice for young offenders: their needs, our responses. UBC Press, 2006). Although, the pathway from mental disorders to criminal intents among young offenders in not fully understood (Tikkanen et al., Psychiatry Res 185:382–386, 2011), despite some emerging evidence of callousness, psychopathy, and offending behavior among youth (Yoder et al., Sci Rep 6:20216, 2016). Nevertheless, early childhood exposure to violence, including domestic violence, has been found to be associated with antisocial behavior among youth, leading to juvenile delinquency (Holmes et al., Child Psychiatry Hum Dev 31:183–193, 2001). Therefore, from intergenerational trauma perspective and over-representation Aboriginal youth among Canadian young offenders, the correlation of criminal intentions, and cascade of trauma among this population, is worth examining, to grasp the connection between trauma, violence exposure, and subsequent juvenile delinquency and related antisocial behaviors. | ||
