RT Article T1 "A path of narrowing options": contextualizing the polyvictimization narratives of women incarcerated in a South African correctional centre JF Critical criminology VO 30 IS 3 SP 777 OP 790 A1 Parry, Bianca Rochelle LA English YR 2022 UL https://krimdok.uni-tuebingen.de/Record/1827885432 AB In South Africa, women make up less than 3% of the country’s total incarcerated population. This small representation means that little is known of their experiences prior to, during or post incarceration. Unfortunately, the number of women housed in South African carceral facilities has also steadily increased over the last decade. It is therefore imperative that gender is considered within the emergent literature of justice-involved women in South Africa. By utilizing a feminist research approach, this study aims to comprehend the shared lived experiences that preceded (?) these women’s transgression of societal norms. Through the use of life history interviews, the narratives of seventeen incarcerated South African women are contextualized, allowing for a critical, gender-sensitive analysis of the challenges these women faced prior to incarceration.
