Summary: | In South Africa, women make up less than 3% of the country’s total incarcerated population. This small representation means that little is known of their experiences prior to, during or post incarceration. Unfortunately, the number of women housed in South African carceral facilities has also steadily increased over the last decade. It is therefore imperative that gender is considered within the emergent literature of justice-involved women in South Africa. By utilizing a feminist research approach, this study aims to comprehend the shared lived experiences that preceded (?) these women’s transgression of societal norms. Through the use of life history interviews, the narratives of seventeen incarcerated South African women are contextualized, allowing for a critical, gender-sensitive analysis of the challenges these women faced prior to incarceration. |
