Academics versus athletics?: the protection and prioritization of college athletics in an era of neoliberal austerity

In an era of neoliberal capitalism, public funding to higher education has increasingly been subject to austerity measures that, based on cost-benefit analyses, have resulted in privatization, tuition hikes, outsourcing, and program, staff, and pay cuts. 520 |a In an era of neoliberal capitalism, public funding to higher education has increasingly been subject to austerity measures that, based on cost-benefit analyses, have resulted in privatization, tuition hikes, outsourcing, and program, staff, and pay cuts. Official rationales for such measures center on cost effectiveness as well as institutional health and efficiency, yet the elephant in the room remains: that of continued financial and institutional support of college athletics. Originally devised to be supplemental to academic programs, university sports have expanded into revenue generating systems of mass entertainment becoming institutional vehicles for the potential acquisition of status and money. Yet, the majority of US colleges report that their athletic programs operate at a financial loss. Here, drawing on Thompson’s (2005: 23) conceptualization of neoliberalism as an "ethic, a set of political imperatives, and a cultural logic," the protection of college athletics over academics will be further unpacked, paying specific attention to institutional priorities where the continuation of athletic spending on ‘big sports’ is considered sacrosanct.
