In unserer Untersuchung werden Themenschwerpunkte sowie Deutungsrahmen auf den Covers des Compact-Magazins durch eine quantitative Bildtypenanalyse rekonstruiert und mit Heuristiken der Populismusforschung sowie dem Framing-Ansatz verknüpft. Das Material besteht aus 118 Titelbildern von September 2009 bis Dezember 2020. Anhand von zehn Bildtypen zeigen wir, wie Feindbilder der „Eliten“ und der „Fremden“, Aufwertungen der „Wir-Gruppe“ sowie verbindende Narrative visuell geframed werden. Diese Bildtypen werden durch Ankerbeispiele vorgestellt und im Rahmen einer ikonologischen Interpretation auf ihre Funktion und Wirkungsweise untersucht. Aus der Codierung wird außerdem eine Bildtypentypologie entwickelt, durch die sich thematische Schwerpunktsetzungen in ihrer Häufigkeit sowie im zeitlichen Verlauf nachvollziehen lassen. Dabei wird deutlich, dass Compact ideologisch flexibel auf Diskursereignisse reagiert, indem es Feindbilder austauscht und seine visuellen Frames zielgruppengerecht aufbereitet, ohne die populistische Grundstruktur zu variieren. Damit zeigt unsere empirische Untersuchung die Produktivität der theoretischen Ansätze der Populismusforschung. 
520 |a Compact is one of the most important popular magazines of Germany’s Far Right that brings together numerous political milieus by strategic topic-setting. The magazine is particularly characterised by an excessive use of buzzwords, neologisms and iconic photomontages. Our investigation focuses the thematic emphases and interpretative frames used on the covers of Compact. These are reconstructed by a quantitative image type analysis and theoretically linked with heuristics of populism research as well as the framing approach. Our material consists of a total of 118 cover images from September 2009 to December 2020. Using ten image types, we show how bogeyman images of „elites“ and „aliens“, staging of the in-group and umbrella narratives are visually framed. These image types are presented through anchor examples in the context of an iconological interpretation of their function and mode of action. From the coding, a typology of images is developed, through which focal points can be traced in their frequency as well as over the course of time. It becomes clear that Compact reacts ideologically flexibly to discourse events by exchanging bogeyman images and adapting its visual frames to suit the target group without varying the basic populist structure. Thus, our empirical study demonstrates the productivity of theoretical approaches to populism research.
