Zusammenfassung:Part of a special issue on collective identities, social problems, and movements. The writer examines trade-unionist counter-discourses that have emerged in opposition to current order of globalized capitalism. She presents a framework for understanding the types of labor and labor control used by globalized capitalism. She outlines the history of a recent effort to form cross-border solidarity between San Diego affiliates of the AFL-CIO and striking workers in the Han Young plant in Tijuana, Mexico. She maintains that this effort provides a case study of the contradictions inherent in the AFL-CIO's “New Voice” of solidarity in a globalized industrial capitalist system. She argues that the AFL-CIO's “New Voice” platform is unable to adequately break with its reification of gender and racial difference.
