Zusammenfassung:Part of a special issue on critical resistance to the prison-industrial complex. The writer discusses the mental condition known as prison psychosis—a state of mental confusion, permanent or transitory, resulting from incarceration or the threat of imprisonment—among black prisoners. He notes that psychological torture exacerbates prison psychosis and results in prisoners being permanently damaged and eventually becoming immune to punishment and pain. He also contends that having a mostly white prison staff guard and a mostly black prison population sets up a situation in which prison staff use barbaric torture tactics to seek revenge for real or imagined offenses or to inflict pain for their personal pleasure.
