The writers utilize macro and micro perspectives to assess why access and participation in the University of California (U.C.) still remains a significant challenge for Latino students. Using research of U.C.'s Latino Eligibility Task Force and from U.C.'s highly selective West Coast University, they demonstrate that case studies reveal that the challenge of succeeding at U.C. is not related to academic performance, rather it is about crossing social bridges under persistent perceptions of negative individual difference, isolation, and the need for perseverance and networking. They provide some starting points and advice that would help to ensure that talented Latino students have the opportunity to realize their full potential.
