Summary:Part of a special issue on race, security, and social activism in the U.S. An assessment of the treatment by a new social movement theory of social class, gender, and race is presented. Theoretical concepts that are derived from discourse theory are applied to the case of Fuerza Unida, a Mexican-American/Mexican social movement of individuals who were formerly garment workers. The power of discourse theory to address some of the limitations of new social movement theory and to inform scholarship on the connections between identity, discourse, and political economy is evaluated.
