Sumario:Part of a special issue on applied research and social justice. The contribution that activism can make to the academic career of the sociologist is discussed. It is argued that applied researchers can improve their teaching and research by integrating their activist and academic roles, and that failure to do so places the researcher in no-man's-land and leaves the obligation to advocate for the marginalized unfulfilled.
