AB Richard Hongisto, a flamboyant and controversial political figure in California's San Francisco Bay Area, died on November 4, 2004, aged 67. Hongisto attracted sensational and sometimes sordid publicity in his later years, but in the 1960s and 1970s, in various policing roles, he was a courageous pioneer of progressive, open-minded criminal-justice policies that challenged discrimination in all its forms.
