Sumario:Part of a special issue on social justice for workers in the global economy. The fair trade movement's potential for securing social justice and environmental sustainability in the face of globalization is examined through a case study of coffee production in Chiapas, Mexico. It is argued that although it is often perceived as consumer activism, the movement's strength is its capacity to address relations of production as well as relations of exchange. The redistributive aspect of the fair trade system, the productive relations it supports, and the ecological element of the movement are examined.
