The writer outlines some of the primary political and economic challenges confronting the academy in community colleges, liberal arts colleges, and publicly and privately funded universities. He states that such trends as a declining overall student population are combining with economic and political factors to place the university as an institution under strain and threaten those who work within higher education. He concludes by urging faculty members to respond to these threats.
