As the Earth as an entity does not conform to ideas of political borders or other socially-constructed divisions, environmentalists naturally view the global community as their natural constituency. However, their attempts to create a “common response” have been built on a colonialist consciousness that promotes a cultural privileging of whiteness. Indeed, the dominant trends in environmentalism are built on an anxiety about the sexualities of non-white peoples, which erodes the rights of those people and denies the fullness of their humanity while simultaneously affirming the authority of whites to colonize and govern the world.
