520 |a Part of a special issue on the role of criminal organizations and individuals, and that of political states and their economic partners in transnational crime. A study was conducted to examine how criminologists can best analyze the crime and harm involved in the destruction of forests. Data were obtained from a review of media reports, government documents, and academic literature focusing on the timber industry in Tasmania, Australia. Findings revealed that in some situations, such as Tasmania, the role of civil society in defining, censuring, and sanctioning deviant behavior takes precedence over that of the state, but the role of civil society in defining and censuring the practice of “illegal logging” must itself be subject to critical examination. Findings indicated that the boundary between deviant and legitimate forestry practices remains unclear and contested, but that merely enhances its criminological interest. Findings are discussed in detail.
