Data were obtained from the text of the Private Security Industry Regulation Act of 2001 and from a review of the literature on the industry. Findings revealed that the South African government, through the provision of what constitutes “security service,” tries to put into perspective which activities private security companies within South Africa should undertake; operating beyond these regulations is an infraction of the act. Findings also revealed that the private security industry has benefited the South African government by creating a general atmosphere of security and income. Findings indicated that South Africa is a good example of an effective regulatory framework for the private security industry. Findings are discussed in detail.
