520 |a Part of a special issue on Latino citizenship and social justice. A study was conducted to examine transnational and transgenerational Latino and Latina cultural citizenship. Data were obtained from interviews with 36 Latino families, including kindergarteners, in Adelante: A College Awareness and Preparatory Partnership in Salt Lake City, Utah; and from university student mentors. Findings revealed that legal and cultural citizenship are closely connected; participant narratives highlight the reality that legal citizenship shapes access to education, employment, and safety. Findings also revealed, however, that kindergarteners, parents, and student mentors, irrespective of their legal status, were involved in ongoing struggles concerning their human rights related to language, culture, education, and belonging. Findings imply there is a need for a multidirectional sharing of wisdom, and an embracing of pedagogies of cultural citizenship in order to move forward in the struggle for acceptance of cultural identities.
