A study was conducted to examine the lives of youth activists affiliated with an organization in the Bay Area of northern California. Data were obtained from field work among this organization, and from the writer's own research and teaching in Salt Lake City, Utah. Findings revealed that young people, like adults, can be seen as “citizens” who position themselves active contributing members of society who are connected to the world they live in because they respond to their membership and act in community. Findings also revealed that intercultural alliances become a site of this “citizenship,” in which young people come together across differences to promote and defend their rights and the rights of others as allies, despite their marginalization. Findings are discussed in detail.
