Data were obtained from fieldwork conducted with two groups of women associated with the Muslim Students Association at two public universities in New York in the period 2001–2005. Findings indicated that these women perceived an increase in hostility and racism against them after the September 11 attacks. Findings suggested that these women were taking action against this hostility through increasing their public presence and altering negative images of Muslim women and their general communities. Findings are discussed in detail. K1 Social marginality K1 Collective Action K1 Muslim Women K1 Women K1 South Asians K1 September 11 Terrorist Attacks, 2001 K1 Student organizations
