Sumario: | A study investigated how the administration of President Barack Obama has developed a strategy for responding to immigration issues. Data were obtained from key statements or comments in respect of immigration made by members of a policy working group that advised Obama on immigration when he was running for president. Findings indicated that in considering immigration reform, the Obama administration might emphasize the following points: giving undocumented immigrants options and/or opportunities to get on the “pathway to citizenship”; effective methods for border security that do not necessarily result in the criminalization of immigrants; and employer sanctions for those in violation of the law or who abuse immigrant workers. Findings suggested that moves to audit the work records of companies that hire undocumented workers imply a shift toward tougher enforcement aimed at employers and a move away from the previous administration's focus on apprehending undocumented immigrants. Findings are discussed in detail. |
