RT Article T1 Looking Through the Gaps: A Critical Approach to the LAPD's Rampart Scandal JF Social justice VO 36 IS 1 SP 61 OP 81 A1 Kaplan, Paul J. LA English YR 2009 UL https://krimdok.uni-tuebingen.de/Record/1747156604 AB An interpretive analysis of official and media documents investigating the Los Angeles Police Department's (LAPD) Rampart Scandal of the late 1990s is presented. The writer suggests two ideological casual factors: the war on crime and the privileged position of police narratives in criminal trials. These factors operating both within and outside the police organization illuminate the influence of racist and essentialist ideological discourse on the patterns and practices of justice system organizations. The writer also suggests that scholars analyzing such instances of police misconduct should go beyond the individualist or organizational approaches to identify the role of ideology in such social problems.
