Summary:In this article the author examines aspects of prison inmate resistance to the regimes of correctional institutions in the United States. The author notes that imprisonment is meant to punish and rehabilitate the malefactor, to protect the community and deter others who might commit similar crimes. The article states that these goals are rarely accomplished except for the element of punishment. A number of issues are addressed including difficult and unsanitary living conditions in prison, the provision of inadequate healthcare, and overcrowding.
