| Sumario: | The article looks at the nature of policing and security in the context of broader political-economic trends, as of 2011. It focuses on the conceptual international location the authors term "Globopolis," of which New York City is the paradigm and power center. It discusses the introduction of zero tolerance policing (ZTP) in New York City in the 1990s under Police Chief William Bratton, which the authors say served as a rationale for the use of aggressive tactics primarily against African American and Hispanic residents. They discuss the global dissemination of the ZTP model. They offer a critical analysis of it, suggesting that it serves to perpetuate the social exclusion of the victims of neoliberal economic policies while deepening everyone else's sense of insecurity and alienation. |
