The author's point is that, at this juncture, people need a more active criminology that learns, in good part, by doing. The author is not saying that people ought to abandon research that is less action oriented or "solutions-driven." There is plenty of room in the field for all kinds of different approaches and different styles and interests. The author is saying that the urgency of the situation underscores the importance of placing a greater emphasis on research that is motivated by the quest for remedies-research that is an integral part of a more concerted set of strategies for social action against violent crime than people have created until now. Violence is ripping apart the social fabric and bringing enormous and the author believes largely preventable-suffering, tragically concentrated in the most vulnerable and disadvantaged communities. Justice, compassion, and a sense of proportion all dictate, the author thinks that criminology take on a more visible and vocal role in promoting serious efforts to end that suffering
