|b After studying history, philosophy and politics at Trier (Germany) and Stirling, he wrote a PhD on the Peasants' Revolt of 1381 which was published in 1995 (in German). Some of his findings on the revolt in Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk have been presented to English speaking audiences in articles published in History 83 (1998), in the English Historical Review 114 (1999), in a Festschrift for Stuart Jenks (2008) and in a conference volume on The Fighting Essex Soldier(2017).

|b In 2003 he joined the Victoria County History of Essex as Assistant Editor and co-edited VCH Essex Volume XI (2012), to which he contributed articles on 'The Resorts between the Wars' and 'The Resorts 1945 to c. 1970'. For Volume XII (forthcoming) Herbert researched the history of the parishes of Great Holland, Little Holland and Frinton.

|b Before joining the VCH Essex Herbert worked as a Research Assistant in Germany in projects on the history of money (1250-1750), the history of witchcraft (1550-1700), and the history of international trade fairs (1250-1550). He has published a range of articles in these fields and edited two volumes of international conferences on witch trials. From 2012 to 2014, Herbert was a Research Assistant in the AHRC-DFG funded project 'Pauper Letters and Petitions for Poor Relief in Germany and Great Britain, 1770–1914'. He also taught medieval history at the University of Trier, and undertook postgraduate teaching at the University of Essex and the IHR.
