|b Economist and instructor at Harvard University, bases his research on the Middle East on his experience as a native of Syria and from living through the Lebanese civil war of 1975-1990 and the Muslim Brothers' revolt of 1976-1982. His contributions to understanding civil conftict include "Religious Identity, Informal lnstitutions, and the Nation States of the Near · East,'' "Game Theory Models with Instrumentally Irrational Players: A Case Study of Civil War and Sectarian Cleansing," and his book entitled „The Religious Origin of the Syrian Conflict: The Remaking of the Fertile Crescent“. His book employs economic and anthropological concepts that highlight the role of political entrepreneurs in the formation of the religious map of the Middle East and the civil conflicts they have generated.
